Actor John Heard of 'Home Alone' fame found dead in California hotel



NEW YORK (dpa) - US actor John Heard, known for his role as Kevin McCallister's father in the "Home Alone" movies, has died aged 71 in California, a spokeswoman for the coroner's office said Saturday.
Heard was found dead Friday evening in a hotel room in the city of Palo Alto, the spokeswoman for the medical examiner's office in Santa Clara told dpa. The cause of death has not yet been determined, she said.



Heard underwent minor back surgery on Wednesday at Stanford Medical Center, according to the website TMZ, quoting an unidentified representative of the actor. He was staying at the hotel while he recovered. Foul play is not suspected, TMZ reported, quoting police.
Heard played Peter McCallister in the comedy "Home Alone," released in 1990, and in a sequel released in 1992. He also starred as a colleague of Tom Hanks in the 1988 comedy "Big."
Born in Washington, Heard established himself as a respected actor in the late '70s and early '80s with roles in several movies. The movie portal imdb.com lists 179 television and movie roles played by Heard.
He had a supporting role in the movie version of the John Grisham crime novel "The Client" and played a corrupt police officer in five episodes of "The Sopranos," for which he was nominated for an Emmy Award in 1999.
According to imdb.com, Heard was involved in six film projects at the time of his death.
