Egyptian-born Quebec student fights for veil right: reports

MONTREAL- A Quebec tribunal is considering the case of a Muslim student who was expelled from a language class for immigrants for refusing to remove a veil that covered her face, local media reported Tuesday.
The Egyptian-born woman was studying French at the Saint Laurent school in Montreal and reportedly refused to show her face in class and asked not to be seated in front of male students.

According to the French-language daily La Presse, her teacher and school administrators tried to accommodate her wishes by allowing her to make an oral presentation from the back of the class with her back to male students.
But after tensions in class her steadfast refusal to remove her niqab finally landed her case before Quebec's immigration ministry, which decided to expel her from the study group in November.
The case is now before Quebec's human rights commission.
