New York police investigate rape accusation against Weinstein

New York - New York police are investigating film producer Harvey Weinstein on suspicion of rape following an accusation made by US actress Paz de la Huerta, officials said Friday.

De la Huerta presented a "credible and detailed narrative," investigator Robert Boyce said during a news conference. "We have an actual case here."
Boyce described de la Huerta's case as credible because of her "ability to articulate each movement of the crime, where she was, where this happened."
The actress has been quoted in US media as saying there were two rapes, both at her apartment and both in 2010. Boyce said the police department learned of the alleged rapes last week and were able to corroborate the allegations.
Boyce said that if Weinstein were in New York now and the assault allegation were more recent, police would arrest him right away. But since Weinstein is in another state and the allegations are years old, investigators must continue gathering evidence and wait for an arrest warrant.
If investigators proceed with a case, it would be the first criminal charges against the movie mogul. Through a spokeswoman, Weinstein has repeatedly denied "any allegations of non-consensual sex."
De la Huerta is known for acting in the HBO series "Boardwalk Empire" and several movies.
Weinstein currently is in therapy, according to news reports.
Dozens of women have come forward with allegations of sexual harassment or assault against Weinstein since the first accusations were published. Other powerful men in Hollywood and in US business have faced similar accusations in the wake of the scandal.
