Ring-forging courses get 'Tolkien Days' under way in German town

TUEBINGEN, GERMANY (dpa)- The southern German town of Tuebingen kicked off its "Tolkien Days" celebration of British author JRR Tolkien's work with ring-forging courses on Monday.
"It's not merely about consumption, it's about making something," said organizer Wolfgang Wettach about the concept for the fantasy-themed week of festivities.

Author Tolkien, who is most famous for his "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, would have turned 125 this year. For fans of his beloved fantasy novels, the ring-forging event made for an ideal opening.
Other creative events include a so-called story slam on Saturday, in which participants will compete by showing off their own fan fiction. Tuebingen's Tolkien Days have been held every five years since 1987.
