London - US online retail giant Amazon on Thursday announced plans to create 7,000 more jobs in warehouses and offices in Britain this year, taking its permanent staff in the country to more than 40,000.
Amazon said it had already added 3,000 jobs in Britain this year and started recruiting for 20,000 temporary seasonal roles over the Christmas shopping peak.
The 7,000 new permanent jobs will be spread over about 50 sites, including two new warehouses in north-eastern and central England.
Amazon said the new roles will help it to "meet growing customer demand and enable small and medium sized enterprises selling on Amazon to scale their businesses."
"While this has been a challenging time for many businesses, it is hugely encouraging to see Amazon creating 10,000 jobs in the UK this year," Business Secretary Alok Sharma said in a statement.
Sharma said the announcement was "a clear vote of confidence in the UK economy" as the government seeks to mitigate the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
Stefano Perego, Amazon's Vice President of European Customer Fulfilment, said the company was "proud to be creating 10,000 new permanent roles across our UK network of fulfilment centres, sort centres and delivery stations."
"Our people have played a critical role in serving customers in these unprecedented times and the new roles will help us continue to meet customer demand and support small and medium sized businesses selling on Amazon," Perego added.
