LONDON - Irish-American author Frank McCourt, best known for his moving memoir "Angela's Ashes," is gravely ill with meningitis, British and Irish newspapers reported Friday.
The 78-year-old former teacher, whose 1996 tale of his childhood years in Limerick won him a Pulitzer Prize and was made into hit movie, is in a New York hospice and is "not expected to live," his brother was quoted as saying.

McCourt was diagnosed with meningitis about two weeks ago following treatment for skin cancer, the Limerick Post reported on its website.
The author suffered a seizure last May while on a Pacific Cruise, and was taken to a New York hospital and diagnosed with melanoma, according to the Scotsman.
