VIENNA - Sculptor Alfred Hrdlicka, an anti-war activist who was also one of the greatest 20th century Austrian artists, died Saturday in Vienna aged 81, gallery owner Ernst Hilger told the Die Presse daily.
A long-time communist sympathiser, despite the crimes of former Soviet leader Stalin, Hrdlicka made the "Memorial Against War and Fascism" which has been on Vienna's Albertina Museum Square since 1991.
A student of renowned sculptor Fritz Wotruba, Hrdlicka's oeuvre -- sculpture, engraving and drawing -- was entirely given over to anti-war and anti-fascist themes.
