BUCHAREST - The controversial trial and execution of Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu and his wife on Christmas day 1989 will be the focus of a play presented Thursday in Bucharest.
"The Last Hours of Ceausescu" was created by the International Institute of Political Murder based in Berlin and Zurich, said the Odeon theatre in Bucharest, which is hosting the play's world premiere.

Written by one of the institute's founders, Milo Rau, and played by Romanian actors, the show "meticulously reconstructs the events and the setting" of the trial in a military barracks in Targoviste in southern Romania.
After two performances in Bucharest on Thursday and Friday, the play is to be presented in Berlin from December 18-21. Bern and Zurich will host it in January and Lucerne in February.
Created in 2007, the institute works on the reconstruction of historical events through art.
Nicolae and Elena Ceausescu were executed by firing squad following a brief trial. His communist regime was the last to crumble in Eastern Europe in 1989.
