A French riot police officer has been suspended after listing his interests as "crusades, Arab-bashing, nationalism" on the Facebook social networking site, police authorities said Thursday.
The gendarme was also a member of Facebook groups such as "The CRS (riot police) should charge with swords drawn at left-wing demos" and "Long live the white race," according to Le Monde newspaper.
He is wearing his ceremonial gendarme uniform in his Facebook profile photo, and says his favourite saying is "Work, family, fatherland," the motto of the French Vichy government that collaborated with the Nazis during World War II.
A gendarmerie spokesman told AFP that the officer had been suspended and an enquiry opened after police were alerted about the Facebook profile.
The spokesman said the gendarmerie condemned "acts or words that are the very opposite of its values."
France has several million residents and citizens of North African Arab origin.
