Hamburg's Elbphilharmonie to start in September

Hamburg (dpa) - Hamburg's Elbphilharmonie concert hall aims to kick off its new season in September with contemporary composers, in the hope that restrictions imposed as a result of the novel coronavirus pandemic will be eased.

"We firmly believe that we can get going after the summer," artistic director Christoph Lieben-Seutter said during an online presentation on Wednesday.
Lieben-Seutter noted the uncertainties facing the concert hall. Even if the restrictions on large gatherings were eased, "it will certainly not be the case that every project will be able to take place," he said.
"The programme is intended to offer encouragement, and provide hope," Lieben-Seutter said. But there would also be a "Plan B" with a reduced programme, if required, he added.
The 2020-21 programme plans to highlight contemporary composers Gyorgy Kurtag from Hungary and Britain's Thomas Ades.
Among the performers scheduled to play are violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja and pianists Daniil Trifonov and Antonio Pappano.
The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Lahav Shani is to make its debut in the Elbphilharmonie, which opened at the beginning of 2017.
