Indian Army: Six militants killed while crossing Kashmir border

New Delhi (dpa) - Six militants were killed on Sunday while trying to cross a de facto border and sneak into India-administered Kashmir, Indian officials said.

A gunbattle had erupted after soldiers had spotted the insurgents trying to cross the Line of Control (LoC) in the Keran sector of the Kupwara district, they said.
The LoC, a de facto border, divides the disputed Kashmir region into two parts, one administered by India and the other by Pakistan.
The bodies of six militants were recovered from the scene following the clash and the infiltration bid into the Indian-side of Kashmir had been foiled, according to the Indian Army's Chinar Corps.
Search operations were continuing since more militants were suspected to be in the area.
India-administered Kashmir has experienced a violent separatist movement that peaked in the late 1980s.
New Delhi accuses Pakistan of aiding the militants and helping them cross over the border to carry out attacks in India-administered Kashmir. Islamabad denies the charges and describes the militants as freedom fighters.
The nuclear-armed neighbours both claim the divided Kashmir region in its entirety and have fought two wars over it.
As Himalayan snows melt with the start of summer and passes become accessible, infiltration bids tend to increase, Indian Army officials say, accusing the Pakistani army of providing cover fire for militants crossing over.
