Israeli ambassador to Jordan starts posting, ending months-long feud

TEL AVIV (dpa)- Israel's ambassador to Jordan, Amir Weissbrod, started his posting in Amman on Monday, filling a position left vacant for nearly nine months after an Israeli embassy guard killed two Jordanians, a spokesperson for the Israeli Foreign Ministry said.
The ambassador's appointment ended one of the most bitter periods in the two countries relations after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanayhu publicly embraced the guard who was slammed by Jordan as a "killer."
Last year, Israel said that the security guard, who shot and killed a Jordanian who allegedly attacked him with a screwdriver and a bystander in July 2017, had acted in self-defence.
The guard, along with other embassy staff, later returned to Israel.
In February, Israel announced the appointment of Weissbrod, a career foreign ministry official with a degree in Arabic Language and Literature.
Jordan, a key US ally in the region, signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1994, becoming the second country, after Egypt, to establish diplomatic ties with Israel in the Arab world.
