Italian conductor Bruno Bartoletti dies

ROME- Italian conductor Bruno Bartoletti, a maestro of contemporary music who specialised in opera, died Sunday in the central city of Florence on the eve of his 87th birthday, ANSA news agency reported.
After studying at the Cherubini Conservatory in Florence he made a career in Europe and the United States, where he became artistic director of the Lyric Opera of Chicago.

Bartoletti worked almost up to the end of his life in Italy's biggest opera houses including Milan's La Scala, the Teatro Regio of Parma, the Rome Opera, the Teatro Comunale of Florence and the San Carlo of Naples.
He also spent a lot of time with the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Florence's May music festival, becoming artistic director from 1985 to 1991.
