LOS ANGELES (dpa)- US director J.J. Abrams will be at the helm of "Star Wars: Episode IX," the film's production company Lucasfilm announced on Tuesday.
Abrams, who already directed and co-wrote "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" in 2015, will now also write and direct the latest sequel, the statement said.
"With The Force Awakens, J.J. delivered everything we could have possibly hoped for, and I am so excited that he is coming back to close out this trilogy," said Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy in the statement.
Just last week Lucasfilm announced US director Colin Trevorrow was leaving the project citing different "visions" as a reason for the split.
"Star Wars: Episode IX" is now scheduled to hit the silver screen in December of 2019.
The film is a follow up to "Star Wars: The Last Jedi," directed by Rian Johnson, and completes the franchise's third trilogy which began with "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."
