Sana’a (dpa) – The head of Yemen’s military intelligence service died Sunday of injuries he had sustained earlier this week in a rebel attack by an explosive drone in the south of the war-devastated country, a military source said.
Major-General Mohamed Tamah died at a hospital in the southern city of Adan where he had been treated since Thursday's attack, the source told dpa on condition of anonymity.
Tamah was among several senior army commanders who had been injured in the strike that targeted the al-Anad air base in the southern province of Lahj during a military parade. Five government soldiers were also killed.
The attack raised fears of further fuelling Yemen’s four-year war that has claimed thousands of lives and pushed the country to the brink of famine.
Yemen, one of the Arab world's poorest countries, has been in the grip of a power struggle between a Saudi-backed government and Iran-linked Houthi rebels since late 2014.
Thursday’s attack comes almost a month after the government and rebels reached a truce agreement on Yemen's key port city of Hodeida at UN-brokered peace talks in Sweden.
Both sides have since accused each other of breaching the ceasefire.
