A man who killed a police dog after jumping off a bridge with the animal, following a high-speed car chase in California, was on Wednesday jailed for 44 months.
Cory Byron, 28, who pleaded guilty to evading police and driving under the influence in the incident on New Year's Eve in 2007, sent the dog tumbling 200 feet to his death after leaping from San Diego's Coronado Bridge.
The dog -- a six-and-a-half-year-old Belgian Malinois named Stryker -- died from injuries sustained in the fall into the waters of the San Diego Bay. Byron suffered a collapsed lung and other injuries in the fall.
Byron had two previous convictions for driving while drunk.
Stryker was given a hero's burial in January last year at a service attended by several hundred people and around 120 service dogs.
