Merkel addresses students at start of 2-day trip to Jordan, Lebanon

Amman - German Chancellor Merkel on Thursday addressed some 100 students at Amman's German Jordanian University (GJU) as she embarked on a two-day trip to Jordan and Lebanon, two of the countries most severely affected by the ongoing refugee crisis.
GJU, Jordan's third largest university, was founded in 2005. Some 100 German colleges participate in shaping the university's curriculum and organizing study trips to Germany and Austria for the students.
Merkel was scheduled later on Thursday to hold talks with Jordan's King Abdullah II about German investments in the small Middle Eastern country, where the economy is under pressure due to a 650,000-strong influx of refugees from Syria.
Merkel will also meet with German troops stationed in Jordan as part of a US-led military alliance fighting Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria.
