Mustapha Adib… and Saad Hariri’s Foolishness

Hazem El Amin

Lebanon is at a truly pivotal moment, and its existence is at stake. In this critical moment, Saad Hariri, Najib Mikati, Fouad Siniora, and Tammam Salam have decided that an undistinguished man, whose biography has been stained with many flaws, shall shoulder this enormous responsibility.

Mustapha Adib’s appointment can be considered an act of sheer folly committed by Saad Hariri, folly not stupidity, because Hariri is fully aware that this moment is ripe for his succession, and he is trying to sidetrack it as long as he can. Having a nameless and an unreliable employee take the helm of the government could buy Saad some extra time in his palace and his leadership, but protecting this man is no longer possible except at a high cost that Lebanon would eventually pay. Alarmingly, this act of folly reaches its peak when we discover that Hariri has decided that his threatened position is more critical than seizing the opportunity to salvage what he could in a country that is sinking rapidly. So he decided, with his partners, the former heads of the cabinet, those with miserable, elusive faces with long experiences in corruption and pawning, that they could seize the opportunity to wash their hands of the grave sins that marred their governmental positions.
Lebanon is at a truly pivotal moment, and its existence is at stake. In this critical moment, Saad Hariri, Najib Mikati, Fouad Siniora, and Tammam Salam decided that an undistinguished man whose biography has many flaws, and with no achievements in public life except for a testimony from a Hezbollah close associate, to shoulder this enormous responsibility. Lebanon and the Lebanese people, are of no account to that ominous quartet. The only aim in view for them is to save what could be saved of their positions in their sects. More than 300 thousand Lebanese whose houses were demolished are to them not worth bothering about. The banks’ seizure of more than one million Lebanese’ deposits is not part of the considerations that made them choose Mustapha Adib, as long as their deposits are safe and were already transferred abroad during the first two weeks of the closure.

His only mission that is clear, is to postpone the political end of Saad Hariri, and to support Hezbollah with more time and opportunities! As for ill-fated Lebanon, and the Lebanese people grieving their city and the loss of their loved ones, these are trivial matters to those who hired Mustapha Adib.

It is important to note that we are not at all saying that Saad has to shoulder the responsibility and accept the assignment, for this is another crisis we would deal with differently had it happened. This is just to say that Adib’s nomination was somewhat a way to break the deadlock the authority had reached. Hezbollah and Michel Aoun were standing on their last leg, convicted for the blast, economic crash, and their poor political performance. That was the case until Hariri’s residence threw them a lifeline. From now on, they will have partners in the scandal, the plunder, and the downfall. Hezbollah is no longer alone with its insignificant partner Michel Aoun in this scenario: now the downfall has become a pact. We have a prime minister nominated by the honorable Sunni sect as a precious gift showered by the blessings of its men. Have you now realized the significance and the creative power of the “All of them means all of them” slogan? Not one of them is innocent from the shedding of Lebanese blood.
The time was ripe for Saad to retire at home and never let Lebanon pay the cost of postponing the moment of his political life’s end, since this moment is inevitably coming. As a matter of fact, the decision was already taken by the Saudi regime before the Lebanese, who gave up any hope in him. As for Najib Mikati and Fouad Siniora, Saad’s partners in the folly, they had to give up all their power in the country to get out scot-free from all the corruption records and the subsidized loans and deals, all of which are supposed to be added to their indictment when the moment comes and they’re called to account.
Our political class has collectively decided to face the calamity that Lebanon has witnessed, the scale of which it had never experienced before since their establishment, by choosing an unknown man named Mustapha Adib. It’s almost as if the name itself suggests that he is not a real man. As for the mission required of him, no one knows if the man has a clue about how to deal with it in the first place. Search engines will get you nowhere and no information about this man’s personality, nor a single idea for what he is going to do with the thousands of problems awaiting his mysterious cabinet. His only mission that is clear, is to postpone the political end of Saad Hariri, and support the regime -i.e. Hezbollah- with more time and opportunities! As for ill-fated Lebanon, and the Lebanese people grieving their city and the loss of their loved ones, these are trivial matters to those who hired Mustapha Adib.
