New York (dpa) - The mayor of New York City says he is proud of his daughter, after she was arrested during protests against the killing of a black man by police in Minnesota last week.

Bill de Blasio confirmed reports that his 25-year-old daughter, Chiara, was taken into custody during demonstrations in the city.
He noted her age and said she did not ask his permission before going to the protests. "I'm proud of her that she cares so much, and she was willing to go out there and do something about it," he said.
He added that he has since spoken with his daughter, who told him her version of the event "She was acting peacefully," he said.
"She believes everything she did was in the spirit of peaceful, respectful protest."
More than 300 people were arrested in New York City on Saturday night. ABC News reported that Chiara de Blasio was among a group of protesters who refused to clear a road.
The New York Times reported that the daughter's name was made public by a police union, which released her personal details on its Twitter account. The post was removed for violating Twitter's rules.
The Sergeants Benevolent Association, the trade union, then had its whole account suspended, at least temporarily.
