Obama and Cameron discuss refugees, Syria

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM- US President Barack Obama and British premier David Cameron spoke by telephone about refugees fleeing Syria and the need for a political transition, Cameron's office said on Thursday.
"Their discussions focused on the situation in Syria," a statement from Cameron's office said.
"They agreed that the increasing number of refugees fleeing the country and the threat from ISIL [Islamic State] underlined the need to make progress on political transition to end the Syria conflict."
A four-year war in Syria has killed some 250,000 people and caused about four million people to flee abroad, contributing to Europe's worst refugee crisis since World War II.
The US president on Thursday accepted an invitation to meet with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, a longstanding ally of regime of Bashar al-Assad in Syria, in a drive to revive efforts to resolve the Syrian conflict.
Obama and Cameron spoke ahead of a UN General Assembly in New York next week, and discussed the possibility of building support for a global deal on climate change ahead of a conference in Paris later this year.
