Oldest US 'soap opera' set to call it quits

US television network CBS has decided to pull the curtain on "Guiding Light," a daytime drama that started on the radio before it moved to television in 1952, Variety reported Thursday.
"Guiding Light" will stop production in September, Variety said. Back in the radio days, detergent companies often sponsored the broadcasts, hence the term "soap opera."

Daytime dramas are fabled for their romances and betrayals, weddings and divorces, previously unknown evil twins, and in recent years, same-sex affection, lately serving as sort of a social barometer in the United States.
