Rooster killed Australian woman collecting eggs, pathologist finds

SYDNEY (dpa)– A rooster attacked and killed an elderly woman collecting eggs on her South Australian farm, a pathologist revealed Monday.
The 76-year-old woman had gone into a chicken coop on her rural property when the aggressive rooster pecked her lower leg, causing her varicose veins to haemorrhage making her collapse, the pathologist concluded in a scientific paper.
Pathology professor Roger Byard of Adelaide University said it was important for people to realise the danger of bleeding from varicose veins.
"[This case] made us realise how vulnerable the elderly are, [varicose veins] are very easy to damage,” Byard told the national broadcaster ABC.
His study — recently published in the Journal of Forensic Science, Medicine and Pathology — focused on the dangers for elderly people who had varicose veins.
