BERLIN (dpa)- Young people from eight European countries will be invited to share their thoughts on a united Europe in the German capital to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.
On November 9, in the presence of President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the young people will present their thoughts on a common Europe at the Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Strasse, the director of the Berlin Wall Foundation, Axel Klausmeier, told dpa on Wednesday.
On November 9, the memorial plans to commemorate the peaceful revolution of autumn 1989 with candles.
According to the foundation, roses will also be placed by the remaining sections of the wall to commemorate the people who died as a result of the former East Germany's border regime.
A prayer meeting is planned in the Chapel of Reconciliation on the former death strip between the two outer walls that made up the Berlin Wall, and Chancellor Angela Merkel is also expected to be present.
With the fall of the wall on November 9, 1989, the division of Germany ended after more than 28 years.
Bernauer Strasse is considered a symbol of Germany's division. Parts of the original wall have been preserved on the street, which features a memorial park and museum. Last year alone, 1.1 million people visited the memorial, which also includes a documentation centre.
On the evening of the anniversary, the president plans to speak to the people at Brandenburg Gate. A big stage show is planned there, including the Staatskapelle Orchestra under renowned conductor Daniel Barenboim and DJ WestBam.
