Sotomayor hearings: No weapons, clothing with profanity

WASHINGTON- The US public may attend hearings on Judge Sonia Sotomayor's confirmation to the US Supreme Court -- but not with weapons or clothing bearing profanity, the Senate Judiciary Committee said Wednesday.
The panel, which kicks off the hearings on July 13, posted a list of rules on its official website for those ready to queue up for a chance to watch a few minutes of the debate.
The list of banned items includes weapons, ammunition "either real or simulated," explosives, including fireworks, knives, blades, razors, box cutters "or other sharp objects (of any lengths)."
Also forbidden are: Pointed objects like "knitting needles, letter openers," aerosol sprays, cans and bottles, coolers, thermal or glass containers, pepper spray, sticks, poles, packages, backpacks, large bags, suitcases, laser pointers, strollers, chairs, umbrellas, food or drinks.
Signs cannot be larger than an average sheet of computer paper, and "must be held directly in front of the body and no higher than the shoulders," the panel said.
Placards and clothing cannot bear "profanity or images deemed inappropriate by security screeners," said the committee.
