NEW YORK (dpa) - Hollywood actor and Broadway playwright Sam Shepard has died at 73, the New York Times reported Monday, citing a family spokesman.
He died of complications from the neurological condition amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, the family said.
Shepard was nominated for an Academy Award as best supporting actor in the role of astronaut Chuck Yeager in 1983's "The Right Stuff."
He won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1979 for the play "Buried Child," and ranked among the leading playwrights of his generation.
Shepard's Hollywood acting credits included "Steel Magnolias" in 1989, "Black Hawk Down" in 2001, and he continued working in film and television until recently, despite his illness.
His film-writing work included 1984's "Paris, Texas."
