DAMASCUS (dpa)- An explosion took place on Saturday at an airbase in central Syria, leaving an unspecified number of people dead, according to the country’s state media.
Syria’s official news agency SANA reported that there had been casualties in the blast at Shayrat airbase in the central province of Homs, but did not specify how many.
The report said the blast resulted from a “technical error” when expired ammunition was being transported.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a war monitor, said at least 12 soldiers and allied paramilitaries were killed in the blast. The toll is likely to rise as others were seriously injured.
The cause of the explosion was not clear yet, according to the Britain-based watchdog.
In 2017, the United States launched dozens of missiles on Shayrat airbase, the alleged origin of a sarin gas attack on the rebel-held town of Khan Sheikhoun in north-western Syria.
