'Texas Chain Saw Massacre' director dead at 74

LOS ANGELES (dpa)- Tobe Hooper, famous for directing cult horror movies including "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and "Poltergeist" has died at the age of 74.
The Los Angeles County Coroner confirmed that Hooper died on Saturday to the Hollywood Reporter and Variety.
The horror movie "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" drew criticism in the US, because of its gory plot and was even forbidden in parts of the country.
The movie cost only about 300,000 dollars and made over 30 million dollars in the US alone, according to the Internet Movie Database. He directed a sequel in 1986 which evolved into an eight-film franchise.
Hooper also directed the 1982 horror movie hit "Poltergeist," written by Steven Spielberg.
Among a number of filmmakers to pay tribute to Hooper, "The Exorcist" director William Friedkin described him as "a kind, warm-hearted man who made the most terrifying film ever."
