Actress Googie Withers dies in Australia

SYDNEY- British actress Googie Withers, best known for her role in Alfred Hitchcock's 1938 film "The Lady Vanishes", has died in Sydney aged 94, friend and theatre producer John Frost said Sunday.
Withers, who was married to Australian actor and producer John McCallum until his death last year, was a star of film and theatre in Britain before she emigrated in the 1950s.

"For a lot of women who went through the war in Australia... when she came to Australia it was about glamour. She came in the 50s and brightened up a lot of lives," Frost said.
He said the passing of Withers and McCallum was the end of an era.
"She was formidable," Frost told AFP. "She was certainly up there in the 40s with great British film stars like Vivien Leigh. She was a big deal in her day."
Born Georgette Lizette Withers, Googie was raised in Britain where she took to the stage dancing and acting at a young age.
But she was adopted by Australia, which appointed her an Officer of the Order of Australia in 1980 for her work in building the country's film, theatre and television industries.
Frost said Withers died in her sleep on Friday.
