Four die in China after drinking toxic alcohol

BEIJING, March 25, 2009 (AFP) - At least four villagers died and more than 10 were hospitalised in central China after drinking grain liquor containing a highly toxic form of alcohol, state press reported Wednesday.
The latest fatality occurred late Tuesday night when the fourth victim of the tainted liquor passed away in Wufeng county in Hubei province, the Xinhua news agency said.

Two men, aged 46 and 62, had died at a Wufeng clinic on Monday and another person succumbed Tuesday afternoon, Xinhua reported, adding that the number of people hospitalised has risen to more than 10.
Tests showed they drank bulk baijiu, a form of grain alcohol, containing a larger than normal amount of methanol, a highly toxic form of alcohol.
The local government was investigating the incident and has warned locals not to drink bulk liquor, it added.
Bulk liquor is sold wholesale and is considered risker than regular bottled alcohol.
Fake and shoddy products often cause health-related accidents or deaths in China, due to inadequate product safety inspections, poor consumer awareness and sometimes corruption.
Earlier in 2009, the former boss of a dairy firm at the heart of a scandal over contaminated milk was sentenced to life in jail after the company's milk powder killed at least six infants and sickened up to 300,000.
