Seized warders freed as Lebanon prison riot ends

TRIPOLI- Inmates who rioted at a Lebanese prison on Monday freed six warders they had taken hostage to press for better conditions and reduced sentences, a security official said.
"After several hours of negotiations between authorities and the inmates, the warders at Qobbeh prison were released," the official told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity.

He said one of the security guards at the prison in the northern city of Tripoli was taken to hospital suffering from slight wounds after being beaten by the inmates.
The mutiny had broken out early Monday with about 30 prisoners seizing the warders.
The security official said that following the rioting, 15 of the inmates were transferred to another prison about 20 kilometres (12 miles) north of the capital Beirut.
Violence broke out at Qobbeh prison in January 2009 with inmates also seizing jailers to demand better conditions.
Qobbeh is the largest prison in northern Lebanon and houses 600 inmates.
