Tens of thousands join French protests against domestic violence

PARIS (dpa)- Tens of thousands of people took part in demonstrations across France on Saturday to call for an end to domestic violence against women, local media reported.
A sea of protesters holding purple signs marched through Paris, with rallies also taking place in other cities, according to French news broadcaster FranceInfo and other media.

At least 116 women have been killed in France since the beginning of the year by their partner or ex-partner, according to research by the news agency AFP. Activists reported at least 137 women killed. Last year, there were 121 deaths, according to official figures.
A debate about violence against women has simmered for months in France, with Equality Minister Marlene Schiappa launching a roundtable on the topic earlier this year.
Activists have accused the government of not taking sufficient action. The centrist government of President Emmanuel Macron is planning to present results of the debate on Monday.
