Abbas sends message of support to quake-hit Chile

RAMALLAH- Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas has sent a message of support to quake-hit Chile, home to the largest Palestinian community outside the Arab world, an official said on Sunday.
"We have let President (Michelle) Bachelet know that once again the Palestinian and the Chilean people stand together in solidarity and brotherhood," Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat said.

"We know from our own history the meaning of surviving tragedies, and we are confident that the Chileans will overcome this sad moment," Erekat said in a statement.
The message came after Chile was hit on Saturday by an 8.8 magnitude earthquake that killed at least 300 people and destroyed the homes of two million others.
Erekat noted that Chile has the largest Palestinian community outside the Arab world, with 300,000 people living between Santiago and Concepcion, a city to the south near the quake's epicentre.
