Aboriginal singer Jessica Mauboy represents Australia at Eurovision

SYDNEY (dpa) - Aboriginal singer Jessica Mauboy has been chosen to represent Australia at the Eurovision Song Contest in Lisbon, Portugal next May.
Australia has been an official competitor in the world's largest television music competition since 2015.
"I have some exciting news! In 2018, I will be representing Australia at the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest!" Mauboy, 28, announced on Twitter.

"I will sing my heart out for Australia. I'm so proud to be officially representing my country and a little bit nervous - mainly about the stress of the dress."
This will be Mauboy's second performance at Eurovision. In 2014, she sang in Denmark in a non-competitive capacity in front of the Australian and Aboriginal flags. It was the first time in Eurovision history that a non-European country had been asked to perform.
The last three participants from Australia have all finished in the top 10, with Dami Im finishing second in 2016.
"Eurovision is a wonderfully joyous and unique event. It brings together over 40 diverse countries and cultures under one roof to unite us all in music," Mauboy said in a statement.
"It shows how much the power of song can transcend differences."
Mauboy, originally from Darwin in Northern Territory, first came to prominence after winning the Australian Idol in 2006. Since then she has sold more than 3.4 million copies of her five albums and has acted in several movies and television series.
More than 3 million Australians watched the Eurovision last year, broadcast live by the local broadcaster SBS.
