Bardot asks Sarkozy to ban seal products

PARIS (AFP) - Former screen goddess Brigitte Bardot has written an open letter to the French president asking him to ban seal products because they are made from animals killed in a cruel way.
The animal rights activist told Nicolas Sarkozy that recent measures taken by the major seal skin exporter Canada to allay accusations that it allowed unnecessary cruelty to animals were not enough.

"There is no alternative but to ban... the importation, trade, exportation and the transit of any product from seal hunting and without any derogation other than that accorded to the Inuit populations," she wrote.
Several European states last year said they wanted a ban on seal products but agreed to hold off on the measure to let Canada review its laws on seal hunting.
The European Commission says that Canada, Greenland, and Namibia account for about 60 percent of the 900,000 seals hunted each year although Canada is the biggest source.
The prospect of a European ban has triggered tensions with Canada.
Bardot retired from movie-making 30 years ago and now devotes herself to animal welfare.
