Beam me up, Scotty: New 'Star Trek' TV series released in 2017

NEW YORK, UNITED STATES- "Star Trek," the TV cult classic with legions of devoted fans around the world, is being recreated in an entirely new production -- just in time to mark the 50th anniversary of the original series.
US television broadcaster CBS announced Monday it will release a new version of "Star Trek" in January 2017.

"The brand-new 'Star Trek' will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966," CBS said in a press release.
"There is no better time to give 'Star Trek' fans a new series than on the heels of the original show's 50th anniversary celebration," said David Stapf, president of CBS Television Studios.
The new series will premiere on CBS and then will be streamed on the network's digital subscription service, CBS All Access, company officials said.
CBS said the new series was not related to Paramount Pictures' forthcoming film "Star Trek Beyond," which is due out mid-2016.
The original "Star Trek" told the story of the flight crew aboard the USS Enterprise spaceship, which ventured around the galaxy exploring new worlds in death-defying adventures.
Although the original "Star Trek" aired for only three seasons, its influence has been considerable with the show inspiring dozens of movies and five successful television series.
Altogether those series are licensed in more than 190 countries, CBS said.
