Britain's Brown says 'real progress' at G20 meet



LONDON - British Prime Minister Gordon Brown welcomed a pledge by G20 finance ministers Saturday to maintain emergency measures to fight the global economic crisis, saying they had made "real progress".
In a statement, he said their meeting in London was "an important step" ahead of a summit of leaders of the Group of 20 largest and fastest-emerging economies in the US city of Pittsburgh later this month.
"Real progress has been made at the G20 meeting in London today," said Brown, who had earlier urged the group not to withdraw economic firefighting measures too soon.



"Finance ministers from the major global economies agreed that there is no room for complacency and that coordinated action must continue if we are to deliver a sustained recovery.
"The G20 has shown once again that governments from around the world can come together to agree the global governance the new global economy needs.
"This is an important step on the way to Pittsburgh and (British finance minister) Alistair Darling and I will continue to work with our international partners to ensure that this momentum is sustained."
