Canada's governor general to open 2010 Olympic Games



OTTAWA, June 27, 2009 (AFP) - Canada's Governor General Michaelle Jean will officially open the 2010 Winter Olympic Games to be held in the western city of Vancouver, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced Saturday.
"I look forward to having the governor general on behalf of all Canadians open officially the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games," said Harper.

"The governor general is a distinguished and inspiring representative for our country both on the world stage and here at home," he added.
Jean, who is of Haitian descent, is the representative of Queen Elizabeth II and as such is Canada's official head of state.
The opening ceremony for the Vancouver Games will be held on February 12.
