Clashes in Tunisian town after Libyan border closed: union

TUNIS- Residents in a southern Tunisian town, angered by the closure of the nearby Libyan border crossing, have been rioting and clashing with police, a union source said Saturday.
"The town of Ben Guerdane has seen violent clashes between residents and the authorities since the beginning of the week," said the union source, adding there had been people wounded and property damaged.

"Youths burned tyres and threw rocks at cars of the police and Libyan travellers," the source added.
The town, located some 30 kilometres (20 miles) from the border, has a major market for Libyan-produced goods, and upon which most of its residents are dependent for jobs.
The border crossing was closed by the Libyan authorities, said the union source, further angering Ben Guerdane residents already unhappy with an 150-dinar (80-euro, 100-dollar) tax Libya imposed on cars crossing the border.
