Dresden takes over at Salzburg festival

SALZBURG- The Dresden State Orchestra will partner the Salzburg Easter Festival, organisers said Tuesday, after Berlin's Philharmonic Orchestra ended its 45-year association with the event.
The Dresden company, headed by Christian Thielemann, will perform at the festival from 2013 until at least 2017, Salzburg mayor Heinz Schaden said.

The Berlin Philharmonic will make its last appearance next year after breaking ties with the event in a dispute over the number of operas it could perform.
Festival director Peter Alward said last month it had not been possible to meet a demand from the orchestra headed by Sir Simon Rattle to stage four performances instead of two.
Its successors will accompany the festival's new production of Wagner's "Parsifal" in 2013 and the Strauss opera "Arabella" the following year.
