EU lawmakers pledge to reject any Brexit deal without backstop

Strasbourg, France (dpa) - EU lawmakers overwhelmingly approve a resolution that rules out any Brexit withdrawal deal that does not include any form of backstop.

The resolution is passed by 544 votes to 126, with 38 abstentions. In it, lawmakers say they would accept the original proposal - rejected by London - of a backstop that only affects Northern Ireland. They also say they are open to looking at credible alternatives to the current safeguards.
EU lawmakers "stress, however, that they will not consent to a withdrawal agreement without a backstop," the European Parliament says in a statement.
The withdrawal agreement requires the consent of the EU legislature to enter into effect.
