Eiffel Tower lights up with "MERCI" to thank essential workers

Paris (dpa) - The Eiffel Tower in Paris has lit up with the word "MERCI" in thanks to health staff and essential staff working in the face of the coronavirus epidemic.

"Thank you to the health workers, police, gendarmes, Paris city officials, civil defence staff, ambulance staff, soldiers, cashiers, bin collectors, shopkeepers, delivery workers, volunteers, helpers, voluntary groups, and all Parisians mobilized to deal with Covid-19," Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo tweeted.
The tower will light up from 8 pm (1900 GMT) to 11 pm daily with messages thanking essential workers and urging others to stay at home, Hidalgo wrote on Twitter earlier.
