Eight wounded in Israeli raids on Gaza: medics

GAZA CITY- At least eight Palestinians were wounded in a series of Israeli raids on the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip on Thursday, Palestinian medics and Hamas security officials said.
Four people, including a seven-year-old boy, were wounded in an air strike on Thursday afternoon on a car in central Gaza, according to Adham Abu Selmiya, the spokesman for medical services in the Hamas-run health ministry.

An Israeli military spokeswoman said the target of the attack had been Ahmed Ashkar, a member of the Eagles of Palestine armed group, and that he had been preparing "terrorist attacks in Israel."
Another four people were wounded earlier in overnight raids in Gaza City and central Gaza, including what witnesses said was a strike on a training base run by Hamas's armed wing.
The military had earlier said it had hit two "terror targets" in response to a rocket fired from Gaza on Wednesday that caused no casualties.
Army radio said that another rocket fired at Israel fell short and landed inside the Palestinian territory.
The number of rocket attacks declined sharply following Israel's massive 22-day offensive against Gaza, which ended in January 2009, and the militant Hamas movement which controls the enclave has taken steps to rein in the attacks, believed to be the work of rival factions.
However, since the start of this year militants have fired more than 160 rockets or mortar rounds into southern Israel, according to the military.
