Former eBay chief Whitman to run for California governor

LOS ANGELES- Former eBay chief executive Meg Whitman has confirmed her plan to seek the Republican nomination in California's gubernatorial election next year, a statement on her website said Tuesday.
Whitman, 53, will announce her candidacy at a press conference later Tuesday, joining a crowded field of contenders seeking to replace outgoing chief Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2010.
Whitman will outline a campaign manifesto which promises to cut spending and taxes, create jobs and improve education in California.

"We have the entrepreneurs, the universities, the innovation and the workforce to make it happen, but Californians need a government that doesn't stand in the way of success," Whitman said.
California has been battered by recession, with unemployment soaring to more than 12 percent and the state having one of the worst home foreclosure crises in the United States.
Whitman helped run Mitt Romney's unsuccessful campaign for the Republican presidential nomination last year, then joined Senator John McCain's campaign.
Whitman is expected to face competition for the Republican ticket from California's Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner and Tom Campbell in the California primaries, due to take place in June 2010.
San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom has already declared his candidacy for the Democratic nomination while Attorney General Jerry Brown, who was governor from 1975-83, is also expected to stand.
