Frankfurter Allgemeine on Trump's speech in Davos

Frankfurt (dpa) - The conservative German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung comments on US President Donald Trump's appearance at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

In an editorial Wednesday, the paper writes, in part:

"There is much to criticize about Donald Trump's performance in Davos. For example his copious self-praise.
"Trump is right, however, with his thesis that the world can only advance in the long term if it looks to the future with confidence and does not sink into the pessimism of purveyors of doom.
"This may have been directed at [teen climate change activist] Greta Thunberg.
"But Thunberg is not alone. The end of the world has been predicted again and again for centuries ... in vain. And it is also true that market economies are most likely to be able to meet the challenges of the future.
"Whether it's about climate change or safe drinking water: progress is primarily a result of innovations. Market economies represent the best bet for developing them."
