Germany's Merkel to tour Gulf next week

BERLIN- German Chancellor Angela Merkel will tour the Gulf region next week for talks on international security, energy and economic ties, a spokesman said Monday.
Merkel will travel to the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Qatar "for political talks with governments and royal highnesses," deputy government spokesman Christoph Steegmans said.

"The focus of the talks will be the development of bilateral economic and cultural ties and aspects of regional security including the nuclear dispute with Iran, the Middle East peace process and the situation in Iraq, Yemen, Afghanistan/Pakistan and the Horn of Africa," he said.
Further issues on the agenda include climate change, cooperation to resolve the global financial crisis and energy security, Steegmans added.
