Gunmen assassinate mayor of Libya's third largest city

BENGHAZI, LIBYA (dpa)- The mayor of Libya's third largest city, Misrata, was found dead shortly after his arrival from Turkey, witnesses and local media reported.
Mayor Mohamed Shetewi was kidnapped from Misrata airport late Sunday by a group of unknown gunmen, witnesses told dpa.

His bullet-ridden body was later found outside a hospital.
Shetewei was a supporter of the UN-backed Government of National Accord based in Tripoli, led by Prime Minister Fayez Serraj.
Libya has descended into chaos since the 2011 overthrow of long-time dictator Moamer Gaddafi.
The country is governed by three competing governments - two in Tripoli and one in the eastern city of Tobruk.
The Serraj-led government took over last year with international hopes that it could restore stability. However, it has been unable to gain recognition from rivals.
