Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung on Trump's Iran backdown and the EU

Berlin - With fears of a full-blown military confrontation between the US and Iran, the Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung looks at the situation, and the EU's own impasse over leadership, with despair.

In a Saturday editorial, the German newspaper writes, in part:
"As if another example of the short-sightedness and cynicism of Donald Trump was needed: On Friday, the US president delivered.
"He wrote that he backed down from a planned strike on Iran because it would have not have been 'proportionate.; He claimed he was not in a rush.
"A war is no longer a question of 'if,' but of 'when.' This horrible utterance creates even more discomfort when one looks at what is currently happening in Europe.
Instead of resolving the most important questions of who will fill the EU's top jobs, the different sides are blocking each other into a stalemate."
