Hundreds hold protest at UN against Iran regime

NEW YORK - Hundreds of protesters here, including some on hunger strike, began Thursday what they vowed would be a days-long demonstration against alleged political repression in Iran, following last month's disputed elections.
Following the June 12 vote that sparked protests by hundreds of thousands who claimed that ballot counting was rigged, "thousands of people have been arrested and taken to jail in recent weeks," said protester Akbar Ganji, a journalist and political activist, outside the UN headquarters in New York.
Ganji said the demonstrators would hold a continuing protest through Saturday.

He said they also would issue a request that UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon visit Iran in the aftermath of last month's dispute elections, to witness the situation there with his own eyes.
At least 20 people in Iran were killed in violence after hundreds of thousands of protesters took to the streets to demonstrate against President Mahmud Ahmadinejad's declaration of victory in the election.
The massive protests in Iran have shaken the pillars of the Islamic republic, triggered Iran's worst crisis since the 1979 revolution, and unleashed a brutal crackdown, demonstrators said.
"After this recent election, there has been a severe repression against the people of Iran. Many people have been killed," Ganji who said he had been imprisoned for several years in Iran.
"This hunger strike is to issue a broad condemnation of the policies of the government of Iran in recent weeks," he said through a translator.
"The most important complaint in our protest is to call for the freedom of all political prisoners in Iran," said Ganji.
Another demonstrator, Ahmad Betebi, a 31-year old student and political activist, said through a translator that the protests -- both inside and outside of Iran -- would go on.
"A flame has been lit and can't be extinguished so quickly," he said through a translator.
"There is unity, solidarity. People are really determined to obtain democracy."
