Israel, Palestinian militants exchange fire in Gaza Strip

Tel Aviv (dpa) - The Israeli army said Wednesday it is targeting "terror sites" in the Gaza Strip, as Palestinian militants fired dozens of rockets.

Israeli police said three Israelis were lightly injured by the rocket fire. No Palestinians have been reported injured from the exchange of fire.
The flare-up comes amid reports of Egyptian-mediated efforts to broker a ceasefire between Gaza's rulers, the Islamist Hamas organization, and Israel.
The army said 36 rockets were launched from the coastal enclave into Israel. The Iron Dome missile defence system intercepted four of the rockets, while most of the projectiles landed into open areas.
Earlier on Wednesday, the army said militants fired upon civilian construction workers along the Gaza border. Israel retaliated by targeting a Hamas position.
Tensions have been mounting since March 30, when Palestinians started staging near-weekly protests along the Gaza border. More than 150 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire during the protests and clashes with the army. Hamas and Israel have exchanged bouts of fire and Palestinians have launched flaming kites and balloons that have burned swathes of Israeli territory.
Israel has blockaded the Gaza Strip since Hamas, considered a terrorist organization by much of the West, seized control in 2007.
