Kuwait's 91-year-old ruler undergoes 'successful' surgery

Kuwait City (dpa) – Kuwait's 91-year-old ruler, Sabah Al-Ahmed Al- Sabah, underwent "successful" surgery, a Kuwaiti official said on Sunday, a day after the ruler was admitted to hospital.

The surgery was performed early Sunday, Minister of Royal Court Affairs Ali Al-Jarah said without giving details, according to state news agency KUNA.
On Saturday, Emir Sabah was admitted to the hospital for unspecified medical check-ups, KUNA said.
A royal order was issued later in the day tasking Crown Prince Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah with temporarily taking over some "constitutional jurisdictions" of the emir.
Emir Sabah has ruled oil-rich Kuwait since 2006.
Last year, he was transferred to hospital in the United States during a trip there.
Although Kuwait has one of the Arab world's most active parliaments, the emir retains the most power, including the right to appoint the government.
